RPET fabric or recycled polyethylene terephthalate is a new sustainable and reusable material that is emerging.
As RPET fabrics become more and more popular, the company is creating special versions of this material.
Fashion retailers such as Converse, Girlfriend Collective and Rothys all have products made from recycled materials.
In order to create products made of RPET fabric in the first place, these companies must work with external sources to obtain plastic bottles.
These bottles are then mechanically broken down into thin flakes, which are melted and spun into yarn.
Finally, the yarn is woven into a recyclable polyester fabric to create Converse’s fashionable sneakers, Girlfriend Collective’s comfortable leggings and Rothys’ sustainable shoes for each used by customers of different ages.
Using sustainable RPET fabric is a great idea if it is manufactured correctly.
With increasing attention to the amount of plastic waste in the oceans and landfills, some cleaning companies have emerged to help reduce our carbon footprint.
Cleaning organizations such as Clean Ocean Action and 4Ocean can recycle more plastic materials into recyclable materials.
The energy required to produce RPET fabric is 33-53% less than that of virgin polyester fiber.
Because of this fabric, plastic materials, especially water bottles are preserved from our oceans and landfills.
THE ADVANTAGES:
RPET is very easy to recycle.
PET bottles are also easy to distinguish from their recycling labels and are accepted by most recycling programs.
Reusing plastic not only provides a better option than landfills, but also helps give it a second life.
Recycling plastic into these materials can also reduce our need to use new resources.
More than half of the first PET production is used to make polyester fabrics.
By using recycled PET, we have reduced the need to manufacture new polyester textiles.
Considering that RPET provides a market for recycledplastics, recycling projects and recycled goods are regarded by consumers as valuable products.
According to EarthHero, “The energy saved by recycling ordinary plastics in one year is equivalent to 360,000 fewer cars on the road in the United States.”
THE DISADVANTAGES:
We know that RPET is easy to recycle, but it is still plastic.
Even if the plastic can be decomposed, the microfibers or microplastics can still be retained.
The fabric form of RPET contains tiny plastic fibers when washed, which can fall off and return to landfills or the ocean, harming its residents.
Needless to say, plastics will stay here for a long time.
Nevertheless, updating the lifespan of plastic products already manufactured is a step in the right direction.
Unfortunately, even the recycling process can have a negative impact on the environment.
It does require less energy to produce products from recycled plastics, but it still emits carbon in the process.
Statistics from the Green Fabric Company show that the leading supplier of RPET-based fabrics pointed out (compared to the original polyester):
85% reduction in energy required
Reduce emissions by 65%: Reduce carbon dioxide and sulfur dioxide emissions by 50-65%
90% reduction in water required
Plastic bottles take 700 years to decompose, so it is extremely important to remove them from landfills and waterways.
When degraded, the bottle did not completely decompose, but turned into tiny microplastic fragments.
Even if we can’t see them, they still harm the environment.
Recycling PET is not a perfect solution, but it still finds new life for plastics.
Creating a new life for plastic water bottles is a great start.
In addition to shoes and clothes made of RPET fiber, this material can also be made into reusableshopping bags;
The use of shopping bags made of RPET also reduces the use of disposableplastic bags.
Considering its advantages and disadvantages, RPET is a more sustainable choice.
